Tandem courses are a
unique formula. It is an innovative way
to learn, with two students of different
languages paired, with the goal of learning
the other language, getting to know the
other culture and at the same time exchanging
knowledge and experience.
What is the "face to
face tandem"?
Tandem learning involves a partnership
of two native speakers, learners of each
other’s language who learn from
each other and help one another to learn.
It's an intercultural way to:
It is underpinned by the principle of autonomy,
which establishes that each partner is responsible
for their own language learning.
Tandem learning is also predicated upon
the principle of reciprocity.
Both partners should benefit equally
from the exchange.
The one caveat is that each partner is
available as an expert but not as a teacher.
The learner is taken through the steps
of defining what she/he wants or has to
be able to do with the language and with
the management of the learning. She/he
then decides on priorities. Learner autonomy
may well become one of the most important
skills for students to acquire given the
way society and the employment market
are evolving.
Partners become confident about asking
for help and guidance as they are giving
the same support back to their partner.
They learn to share equally the time allocated
to language learning. They decide on the
frequency and type of error correction.
Interaction is enhanced by the acquisition
of negotiating skills We know how important
social and affective factors are in language
learning.
